NCAA football fans have been treated to an entertaining here in the college ranks, and the Heisman race has been one of the most exciting parts of the season as the status of favorite has been snatched heading into the bowl games. Here is a look at the five players you’ll have to wager on for the presentation in New York on Saturday night.
Robert Griffin III, Baylor (-500): RG3 has turned Baylor into a household name, and he has emerged as more than just a running quarterback, leading the nation in passer rating, throwing 36 touchdowns with only six picks. It’s definitely no BetOnline scam to see the junior quarterback leading the Heisman race and furthermore, his draft stock is through the roof.
Trent Richardson, Alabama (+250): Richardson has been all we expected and more, finishing sixth in the nation in rushing and fifth in rushing touchdowns as the Crimson Tide roll into New Orleans for a rematch with LSU for the national title. Bookies that use pay per head companies have Alabama as an underdog in the BCS title game, but they’ll have Richardson in the backfield and a Heisman pose may be in order.
Andrew Luck, Stanford (+350): Luck should still be the favorite for the No.1 pick by those who use a price per head service, but he can no longer count on having the Heisman on his mantle heading into Stanford’s Fiesta Bowl showdown with Oklahoma State. It’s not like Luck did anything to lose his status, but the two players ahead of him have been extraordinary. Still, don’t count out the future Indianapolis Colt.
Montee Ball, Wisconsin (+1500): Ball is one touchdown shy of Barry Sanders’ legendary record he set with Oklahoma State in 1988 and he is fourth in the country in rushing. Wisconsin has one of the strongest ground games in the NCAA and Ball is at the heart of their success, although having Russell Wilson at quarterback has opened things up. Wisconsin plays Oregon in the Rose Bowl, and you can expect Ball to have a big game.
Tyrann Mathieu, LSU (+2500): A defensive player hasn’t won the Heisman since Charles Woodson did it for Michigan in 1997, but like Woodson, Mathieu is not only an expert defender, but he is a threat to score anytime the ball is in his hands. Mathieu has four touchdowns in 2011, including game-changing punt returns in LSU’s past two games, and he has picked off a couple of pass and forced five fumbles. He is an impact player and it’s scary to think he’s only a sophomore, so he is a definite longshot this year, but don’t be surprised to see him in next’s college football betting odds.
