While Toronto Raptors fans will watch their No.1 pick, Jonas Valanciunas, play in Europe this season, most of the league will have their rookies on the court and in the running for the Rookie of the Year award. Here are the top five bets to consider.
Derrick Williams (+350): The former Arizona star was drafted second, and his odds are no BetOnline scam as Williams is an athletic freak of nature who can bang inside, but he can also step out and hit the three-point shot. Alongside Kevin Love, Minnesota could have a forward duo to rival anyone in the league. Williams thought he should have been the No.1 pick; now he has to prove it.
Kyrie Irving (+500): The former Duke star was selected first even though he played just 11 games with the Blue Devils because of his foot injury, which is the only reason he isn’t favored by price per head companies that help set lines. But Irving will be given full control of Cleveland and he can get to the hoop at will, setting up others while looking for his own shot, and he does it so effortlessly.
Enes Kanter (+500): The big center was supposed to play at Kentucky, but had his eligibility taken away for playing in a Turkish pro league. In Utah, he’ll be alongside Memhet Okur, who is also from Turkey and can make his adjustment easier, and Kanter is the best pure center prospect coming into a league where centers are at a premium.
Brandon Knight (+800): Detroit won’t be given much love by those who use bookie software and no one else expects much of them either, which means Knight will be allowed to progress at his own pace. Knight started off slow at Kentucky, but he eventually became arguably the best player on the team, hitting clutch shots when the Wildcats needed it. He was also tutored by head coach John Calipari, who mentored two future Rookie of the Year winners in Derrick Rose and Tyreke Evans (John Wall would have won, but he had to go up against the Clippers’ Blake Griffin).
Klay Thompson (+1200): Thompson is a longshot, but in Golden State, he should be able to get his shots, especially if the Warriors trade either Stephen Curry or Monta Ellis. Thompson is an athletic shooting guard who is the son of Mychal, who was a former No.1 pick and played on Magic Johnson’s Lakers, so Thompson has been around basketball all of his life and has a strong support system heading into the league. New coach Mark Jackson wants the team to play defense, so they won’t be as uptempo as in recent years, but Thompson may get enough looks in the offense to be a serious sports betting darkhorse in this race.
