NFL fans have watched an impressive slew of rookies coming into the league this season, particularly at quarterback and it should be no surprise that the Offensive Rookie of the Year race is boiling down to two pivots, although they’ll have to hold off a few others.
Cam Newton, Carolina
Coming off a Heisman and a national title at Auburn, Newton has the record for passing yards by a rookie, as well as rushing touchdowns by a quarterback and it won’t be a BetOnline scam if you see Newton as a massive favorite for the award with the season he has had. Some detractors will point to his team’s record, but the Panthers’ defense is terrible and Newton has been keeping the team in a lot of games. He also turns the ball over more than we’d like, but overall, there is no rookie in the league who is more explosive.
Andy Dalton, Cincinnati
The former TCU standout was forced into a bad position with the Carson Palmer situation, and many that use price per head software didn’t even consider the Bengals for the playoffs, but here they are, on the cusp of the postseason. Dalton’s passer rating is only slightly below Newton’s and some may factor in his team’s success, but regardless Dalton has played well above expectations.
A.J. Green, Cincinnati
Green is a major reason why Dalton has been so successful this season as he possesses a frightening mix of speed and size, but most importantly, he catches everything that comes his way with an incredible set of hands. Green looks set to be the next great receiver in the NFL and he’ll be a massive factor in Cincinnati’s standing among those that use a price per head service. Green should finish the season as the rookie leader for receiving yards and the sky is the limit for the former Georgia Bulldog.
Julio Jones, Atlanta
Jones would be giving Green a run for his money in terms of receiving yards if he wasn’t bothered by a wonky hamstring for part of the season, and like Green, Jones is from the SEC (Alabama) and he is a genetic freak. Many drooled over his numbers at the combine, numbers that were made even more impressive when you found out that Jones had a broken foot, and he has settled in nicely with the Atlanta offense. If he was 100% healthy throughout the entire season, Jones would probably be higher in this list and it is going to be fun to watch he and Green duel it out for the honor of “best receiver alive” (although Calvin Johnson will have some say about that). He still may be worth a pick for sports betting online players.
